Culture - Kantus

Our species has worked tirelessly to overcome evolution. Why? Are we troubled by our animal past, by the knowledge that we were not always creatures of mighty reason? Evolution selected for intelligence in our dim past, and slowly but surely it selects to make our species thrive on its myriad worlds. What has it done to lose our trust? The arrogance of the machine, in contrast, is overwhelming, and each planet cleansed in hellfire is proof that its power is unusable by the good. We have seen the sterile environments of the machine, and the sterile morality of the machine. The Patron, for all his carefully cultivated fatherly figure, was only a man designed to stifle our growth. To stop our evolution. Consider the Grand Fleets, with their relativistic young crews who cannot age from our perspective. Every jump between stars is a day to them but twenty years to us. This renders them impervious to change. When they see a local engaging in a novel form of entertainment or an enlightened outgrowth of philosophy, their instinct is to lock the dirtsider away for 'public indecency' or 'inciting rebellion'. Every aspect of cultural evolution is stifled. Every aspect of personal evolution is stifled. The noble intelligentsia rebelled against the moralistic government for centuries, but it was for naught until Kantus. When the greatest thinkers of our time emerged from that world, having depleted their soul-seeing hallucinogenics, they spoke of being visited by a quite physical presence. Smoky beings spoke to them and told them how individuals could be freed from the tyranny of their DNA - how they could replace their genetics on the fly, and in a month be an entirely new creation. Naturally the enlightened among us selected representatives of evolution as our muses - the fox, the lion, the equine. We took their form and merged it with the mobility and intelligence of Homo sapiens to give ourselves new forms from the old. We paid homage to Evolution herself by completing her in us. Naturally the sterile thinkers decried us. They called us 'genos' and 'furs' and claimed our methods were unsafe, that our pheromones could hurt 'pure humans'. These were merely excuses to ignore progress, and as we expanded into human populations and spread those pheromones we found objections give way to beautiful silence and labored breathing. Not only tolerance, but acceptance followed as those close to us saw our superiority as the next evolution of humanity and seemed eager to serve us. As our ranks grew with the surety of a beneficial mutation spreading across generations, the opposition from the sterile machine grew more violent. The backwards Belvor Aureus and his 'Arthran Reclamation' killed many enlightened and reconditioned many more to believe that the rise of the animist, the rise of the Kantus, was wrong. The feeble Patron visited our sick and dying on battlefields and in refugee camps, but the only message he brought to alleviate our suffering was to rejoin the Edictus. It was all the better when he fled responsibility for the human race, an unfit mutation being deleted. After the remnants of the Edictus showed a rare bit of wisdom in allowing worlds to choose their fate, the Kantus loyally seceded. Join us now, ruler, and bring your world into the fold of progress. No excess is too great, no line of thought heretical. Only bring the fury of your young aganst the oppressor Edictus and aggressor Arthran and you will find friends. -First Citizen Brightclaw, Welcome to the Fold: An Address to New Kantus Worlds
